Multiple crashes on NE Extension of PA Turnpike – Dec 21, 2012

Ignore the timestamps on the videos!

First crash, truck overturned at final curve northbound before toll booths in Clarks Summit PA.

Second crash, northbound coming out of Lehigh Tunnel, appears that one tractor slammed into the back of a trailer and crushed it, both burned to the ground and still smoldering as I went by. Traffic of course all backed up.

Third crash, a few miles south of the tunnel crash in backed up traffic. I counted at least three cars in the blaze. Most likely the first car stopped for the traffic backup from the first wreck, and at least two other vehicles plowed into it, bursting into flames. As I drove by the heat was intense, and all that was left of the vehicles were red hot shells. Not likely there were any survivors.

Everyone in this “me first” society is in such a rush, and some paid dearly for it tonight. So many truck drivers still think the only way to drive is as fast and as far as you can, run multiple logbooks, and to hell with any of the rules. To them it’s not manly to obey the laws, these people live in their make believe world where they think of themselves as “outlaw truckers’. That in part has helped spur the ridiculous barrage of new laws coming from the feds trying to get these nitwits under control. Don’t get me started and up on my soapbox!

Mommy in a rush – Fairless Hills, PA exit off US Rte 1

Young mom with youngster in child seat in back, cell phone on right leg texting, had to pass me across double yellow line/no passing zone so she could get to the light before me. If a truck did it everyone would be complaining about the wreckless truck driver. As much as I hate to say it, I think southeastern PA where I grew up has some of the very worst drivers in the country. Since only state police have radar in PA there is almost no chance of getting a speeding ticket, it is very rare. This has led to total anarchy on the highways here, 15-20 over the limit is the normal speed, no one stops for stop signs, some barely slow down for red lights. Another good reason to have as many cameras on the truck as possible to C.Y.A. in court.

Ignorant Truck Driver – Mass Pike I-95 exit

Electronic toll booths have advantages, but in many states vehicles speed through the tollbooth as fast as they can, resulting in crashes and near crashes. Here you can see I had to pay my cash toll in the middle of the available lanes. As I was getting up to speed and as about eight lanes rapidly narrow down to two lanes, this truck comes past me on the right after going through the EZPass lane probably 30mph. Coming across at an angle I was unable to see him in my mirrors. He obviously was going to get in front of me, no matter what. From my point of view he suddenly appears and I came to a sudden nearly complete stop. The video does not really show the perspective of how close I came to plowing into the side of his trailer, and having video in the truck like this would be my best defense to explain what happened if we did collide. Basic traffic law in all states – the vehicle passing shall yield the right of way to the vehicle being passed – as if anyone pays attention to that one obviously!

Nuclear Sunset

Grabbed a quick shot of the sun setting behind the plume coming off the cooling towers of Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania a couple of weeks ago. The colors have not been altered, this was how the sky was lit up. Notice the shadow of the cloud cast upwards from the sun on the horizon, due to all the dust in the air, which was the reason for the vivid colors. Seems a more fitting scene for a tropical paradise rather than rural farmland.
