Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia PA

The day didn’t turn out well weather wise, temps hovering near freezing and winds 40mph and gusting.  Didn’t get out and about around Penn’s Landing to see the ships and other sights in the nearby neighborhoods.   This is about the only photo of the day not related to the luncheon at the Chart House restaurant.

I-95 into Philadelphia

Starting next to Philadelphia Int’l Airport to just past the Ben Franklin Bridge where traffic normally comes to a stop as rush hour begins.  Coming off of the lower span of the big bridge over the Schuylkill River you can catch a glimpse of the Philadelphia Navy Yard and one or two of the ships there.  Some bits of the skyline, sports stadiums, and Penn’s Landing where there are two sailing ships, and a yacht docked next to the Chart House restaurant where I’ll be taking photos tomorrow.

This one is only 2x normal speed. I know the date is wrong. After a few days off and not plugged into power the DVR seems to reset to 01/01/2011 which is going to get very annoying.

650 mph across deserts, over mountains, and through cities!

Well, maybe I didn’t really drive that fast.  But, to condense all the scenery into something viewable that’s the speed the videos are equivalent to.

Ogden UT through the canyons to I-80 West

This ones a little longer, but 8 hours of driving shortened to 32 minutes.  This is from near Gallup, NM to Snowville, UT.  Much of it was on state roads, up to Ship Rock, NM, through Cortez CO, over into UT and up through the desert then Moab with all the National Parks.  Continue north up through Price UT where dinosaurs archeological sites are located all throughout the region, then back over the mountains again to I-15 and north through Salt Lake City and Ogden, and finally Snowville just 7 miles short of the Idaho border.

I now have a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) mounted in the truck.  Here’s a video heading into Green River, Wyoming, showing some of the great scenery and heading through the tunnel on I-80.

Where am I ?

If you’re wondering where I am, usually this link will show you my truck location.  Also it can show my track for the past seven days.  This is part of amateur radio and is called APRS.  It uses a GPS connected to a radio transmitter to send my location every two minutes.  Any gaps in my track are from the lack of any stations available to receive my signal.  At this time my last location is shown  near Elk Mountain, WY, however I’m sitting comfortably in a motel in Laramie, WY.   In this remote and somewhat hostile location there are no stations to receive my position reports and retransmit them to the internet servers.

Desert Views

Things you see out in the desert.   Old style windmills on metal frames, to the newest style.  For those who haven’t come out west there are windmill farms all over taking advantage of the free energy out here.   But they do certainly detract from the view of the landscape in many places.

Boulder City, NV

Spent the night in the desert, shielded from the lights of Las Vegas by a mountain.  Amazing just how bright the stars are on a clear night when no city lights are around.   I’m working on some panoramic photos I did in the early morning from where I unloaded.  It will take another day before all the photos are done, they take quite awhile to process.  Tomorrow will be another photo day in Las Vegas if the weather clears up.

Provo, UT

Finally left Salt Lake City this morning, went to Provo UT to load.  All the snow melted on the road with temps in the 40′s, making a mess out of my (rarely) clean and shiny truck.   Got bags of chopped rubber to go to a shooting range near Las Vegas, where I am now.  Parked behind a warehouse out in the desert far away from roads or people.  What fun to find this place in the dark going down unimproved roads with unmarked dirt roads leading off into the mountains.  Fortunately I found the right one to turn down.   I’m wondering what this will look like when the sun comes up and I see where I am.  :-)
